Soil & Rootzone Review

Going beyond soil nutrition to understand what's really happening beneath your turf.

Conventional soil analysis provides valuable information about nutrient levels, availability and soil chemistry. But healthy turf depends on more than nutrition alone.

Poor drainage, compaction, excess organic matter and restricted oxygen availability can all limit root development and turf performance, even where nutrient levels appear satisfactory.

Soil Biology's Soil & Rootzone Review takes a wider look at the growing environment, combining on-site observations, relevant measurements and an assessment of current management practices to identify underlying problems and opportunities for improvement.

The result is a practical assessment of rootzone health, with clear recommendations to support stronger, healthier and more resilient turf.

What does the review cover?

Our technical advisor will visit your site to assess the physical condition of your rootzone and the factors influencing turf performance.

Depending on site conditions, the review may include:

  • Moisture and drainage – assessing water movement, infiltration and areas prone to excessive moisture or poor drainage.
  • Rooting and rootzone health – examining root depth, development and visible signs of stress or restricted growth.
  • Compaction and aeration – identifying restrictions to air and water movement that may limit rootzone performance.
  • Thatch and organic matter – assessing accumulation and its potential effects on drainage, oxygen availability and turf health.
  • Soil measurements – reviewing relevant pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and other available soil information.
  • Current management practices – considering irrigation, nutrition, aeration and maintenance programmes and their influence on rootzone conditions.

The review is tailored to the individual course, focusing on the areas and issues most relevant to your turf.

Additional Service

Optional Irrigation Water Analysis

The quality of the water applied to your turf can be just as important as the condition of the soil itself.

Irrigation water may contain dissolved salts, bicarbonates and minerals that influence nutrient availability, soil chemistry and rootzone performance over time. These factors are not always apparent through conventional soil testing alone.

For a more comprehensive assessment, Soil Biology can arrange laboratory irrigation water analysis to examine key water quality indicators, which may include:

  • pH and alkalinity
  • Electrical conductivity (EC) and salinity
  • Sodium and Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR)
  • Calcium, magnesium and mineral balance
  • Bicarbonates and other relevant dissolved constituents

The findings can be considered alongside your Rootzone Review, helping identify potential water-related issues and inform more effective irrigation, nutrition and rootzone management decisions.

Irrigation Water Analysis is available as an optional additional service. Please enquire for details.

From observations to practical action

Understanding what's happening beneath the surface is only the starting point. The real value comes from knowing what to do next.

Following the visit, you'll receive a concise written report outlining:

  • Key observations and findings from the assessment.
  • Potential causes of poor rootzone health or inconsistent turf performance.
  • Areas requiring attention and recommended priorities.
  • Practical management recommendations to address identified issues.
  • Opportunities for further investigation or targeted treatments where appropriate.

Our approach is to identify and address the factors affecting turf performance, rather than simply treating visible symptoms.

Why choose a Soil & Rootzone Review?

Rootzone problems can develop gradually and often become more apparent during periods of environmental stress, heavy rainfall or intensive play.

Even where nutrient levels appear adequate, poor root development, restricted oxygen availability or ineffective water movement can prevent turf from performing at its best.

Taking a wider view of rootzone conditions can help you:

  • Identify emerging problems before they become more serious.
  • Make better-informed irrigation, aeration and nutrition decisions.
  • Address underlying causes of weak or inconsistent turf growth.
  • Target treatments and resources more effectively.
  • Support stronger rooting and longer-term turf resilience.

Soil analysis tells you what's there. A Rootzone Review helps you understand what's happening — and what to do next.
